Finally, Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest 3 HD is a real project and not just a dream we all had and somehow have screenshots of as proof. Yuji Horii, the creator of the Dragon Quest series, told Famitsu (thanks to Gematsu) that the development on the remake is “progressing quite steadily.”
Dragon Quest 3 in HD-2D, the working title for an upcoming remake of one of the best JRPGs of all time, was first announced back in May 2021 in conjunction with a gameplay trailer for the game. After more than two-and-a-half years, I’ve been waiting not entirely patiently for an update on the remake, whether that is a new trailer, a release date, or simply some new details about the project. However, until now, there has been no sign of it.
It’s true that simply confirming that the game is still in development and moving along at a steady pace is about as meager an update as you could ever give a game, but I’ll gladly take it over a prolonged period of radio silence.
Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, on the other hand, was announced at the same time as the remake of Dragon Quest 3 and has gone largely silent since then as well. During the same interview with Famitsu, Horii simply stated, “There’s not much I can say at this time.” That’s a bummer, isn’t it?
A game which was first released way back in 1988, Dragon Quest 3 puts you in the shoes of the legendary warrior Ortega’s son or daughter (you get to choose) who has been tasked with saving the world from the threat of the Demon Lord Baramos, who is out to destroy the world. The game is characterized by a wide range of changes over the first two games, such as a new, more open-world setting, the introduction of a day/night system, the possibility for players to freely swap party members, and more.
