I think there is a little too much overlap between Into the Breach and a new Godzilla game.
On September 1, Toho Games revealed the first trailer for Godzilla Voxel Wars, which you can take a look at below (thanks, Automaton Media). It is expected that the new game will be released on PC in the near future, and it bears a close resemblance to one of the best indie games of the last five years: Into the Breach.
The game allows you to play as Godzilla, Mothra, and many of the other iconic monsters designed by Toho, and it’s our job to fight against weird mushroom-looking monsters that are intent on destroying the city around us in order to save it. In this adventure, it’s Godzilla and his monster pals who are protecting humanity from a threat that threatens to destroy them.
The problem is that all this action looks as if it could have been taken right from the pages of Into the Breach. There’s even more to Voxel Wars than just the fact that the design and gameplay are reminiscent of the 2018 indie game – Voxel Wars literally looks like it’s straight out of Into the Breach with its ability to repel enemy attacks around the tiled board in order to keep them away from buildings with a variety of creative abilities.
There is an interesting fact that Voxel Wars is led by a Japanese studio called Nukenin, which is headed by a man named Ken Watanabe (no, not that one). The developer is a bit of a Nintendo veteran, having previously worked on games such as Pikmin 3 and Splatoon, but has since taken his skills to the freelance market to make his mark.
As of right now, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of buzz about Godzilla Voxel Wars online. That’s probably due to the fact that the game doesn’t yet have an English-language trailer, or even a release date at the time of writing. However, there are an incredible number of comparisons that can be drawn between Into the Breach and Toho’s new game, whatever the case may be.
