Trine: The Clockwork Conspiracy (PS5) Review

Frozenbyte’s Trinium 5 is a puzzle platforming adventure game for one to four players. The three heroes, Amedeus the wizard, Zoya the thief, and Pontius the knight, set out again to thwart a clockwork army, restore order, and bring justice to the villains after attending a celebration at Astral Academy.

There are five acts in the campaign, containing physics-based platforming, puzzle-solving, and challenging combat. Each act has four levels of 40-to-50 minutes each. As with its predecessors, you can play the entire game online or locally, switching between the three Heroes of Trine as you go. The trio is equipped with both familiar and fresh abilities that you’ll unlock via the skill tree or through chests found along your journey. Your puzzle options will be expanded with these skills, including elemental arrows, shield glides, magnetic crates, and cloning. You’ll overcome obstacles by combining the abilities, creating some magical puzzle platforming moments.

The sequel’s presentation is another highlight for the series, thanks to Trine’s mystical visual style and charmingly calm music. As you pass through an aquarium with fish schooling around in the background, swing between masts on ships in the dockyard at dusk, and traverse the dangers of the crystal caves, you’ll no doubt stop to take screenshots. Trine 5’s presentation has an extra touch of polish and attention to detail.

With a whole new campaign and a wide range of fresh and familiar abilities, Trine 5 appeals to both new and returning fans of the series.

Pros:

  • Progression is good.
  • Content aplenty.
  • A gorgeous setting.
  • Music I like.
  • Puzzles that challenge you.

Cons:

  • Bugs occasionally.
  • UI bloat.

I would rate this game for 8 over 10.
