Inscryption is a card battling roguelike at first glance, but what happens outside of those duels is what makes it so captivating. There are a lot of layers in Inscryption; pulling them back and understanding how they work is what makes it so great.
You play card battles across from a menacing figure like in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The ability of your cards and attack damage must be used to win each match. As you encounter situations rewarding new cards, items, and chances to upgrade your deck, the silhouette opposite takes on different personalities. In any single area, you’ll be sent back to the beginning if you lose two matches.
Every battle remains engaging and intense, with the luck of the draw playing an important role in whether you succeed or fail. When you understand boss mechanics, you can beat them more easily. While Inscryption is a great card battler, its secrets, which are plentiful, remain the main attraction.
Leaving the table to explore your surroundings leads to secrets, puzzles, and discoveries you wouldn’t expect from a game based on the screenshots accompanying this review. The game does go off the rails in a good way, so we’ll have to keep this element of the game secret. You’ll want Inscryption on your wishlist if you’re in need of something really off the rails.
It’s consistently difficult, so expect multiple attempts. The PC port introduces some slightly awkward controls, but you’ll get used to them.
Close this page, boot up your PS5, and buy the game. Keep yourself in the dark. You’ll be glad you did.
