Baldur’s Gate 3 Guardians: Who Are They and What Do They Do?

It is reasonable to wonder who the Guardian is in Baldur’s Gate 3 after making them in character creation but never seeing them again. Initially, at least. In spite of spending time crafting whatever a Guardian is, they are nowhere to be found for a significant portion of the opening hours. There are still plenty of questions to be answered…

For a while, you’ll have a hard time figuring out what your Baldur’s Gate 3 Guardian was for until they appear. Even then, your relationship remains unclear and explanations are thin. Let me explain what they are and why they’re in the game. There won’t be many spoilers, except for the obvious explanations and answers to the questions that probably brought you here in the first place.

WHAT IS THE BALDUR’S GATE 3 GUARDIAN?

The Guardian in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an entirely separate character created during the character creation process. Once you start playing, you won’t see or hear from them for hours. Ultimately, they are an NPC who appears during certain cutscenes, but not a character you will ever fight or play as (which is why you do not select their class, background, or stats). The relationship between you and them in Baldur’s Gate 3 is entirely conversational, with your character simply speaking with an important character at key points.

HOW TO FIND YOUR GUARDIAN IN BALDUR’S GATE 3

At certain points in the game, the Guardian appears in the player’s dreams, triggered by the Illithid abilities of the Parasite. You will need to keep using the Parasite until you meet them, then you will need to go back to your camp and rest for quite some time in Baldur’s Gate 3. After a sufficient amount of time has passed or after you have reached a certain point in the story, you should be able to interact with the Guardian (don’t worry, we will not spoil the exact nature of that dialogue).
