Sega President Says More Sonic Reboots And Remakes Are Being Considered

There are rumors that we could be in for more Sonic reboots and remakes in the near future, so prepare yourself, Sonic fans.

It was Yukio Sugino, President and Chief Operating Officer at Sega, who made this comment in a recent interview with Famitsu (translation by Dualshockers), where he stated that the Sonic franchise has become “Sega’s signature IP,” and the company is “considering” the possibility of a reboot or remake.

Sugino explains that Sega considers developing remakes individually for each of its series that it owns. It also depends on whether the timing of the remake is “appropriate” or not, according to Dualshockers. Sonic Superstars, the upcoming game starring Sonic the Hedgehog, sees the series return to its 2D side-scrolling roots and even has Sonic’s original designer on board as one of the designers for the game. We are considering reboots and remakes as part of our plans for [Sonic Superstars], as reported by Dualshockers in parallel with the launch of Sonic Superstars.

Sonic Origins, the most recent re-release for the Sonic series, was released in 2022, which received poor reviews at launch because it was plagued by a number of bugs when it first came out. Among the games in the collection were remasters of the first four Sonic games, and the expanded version, entitled Sonic Origins Plus, included all 12 Sonic games published for the Game Gear platform.

A number of side-scrolling Sonic games are being planned for the future, as suggested by Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto back in February. In hindsight, it’s obvious that he was referring to Sonic Superstars, but could he also have been referring to some of Sonic’s other 2D outings which have received less attention in recent years? Is there a chance we will be able to see polished versions of the games released as part of Sonic Origins Plus in the future? It is possible for a girl to dream.

As Sonic Superstars appears to be progressing well so far, and given that Sonic Frontiers “greatly surpassed” Sega’s sales projections, now would be a good time for Sega to release some solid reboots or remakes of classic Sonic games for fans to enjoy.
