Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS5) – A Marginal Upgrade in Compatibility

Among a long line of free next-gen upgrades, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is pretty straightforward. You can play backwards compatibility with the native PS5 version, but it has a few extra bells and whistles. A native 4K resolution with upgraded textures is the most obvious change. However, the frame rate is only 30 frames per second. There is a 60 frames-per-second mode tied to 1440p resolution, which is an improvement over 1200p.

The other significant change is to load times, which are significantly improved. Previously, load times could reach astronomical lengths, completely halting the flow of gameplay. Even though it’s free, it’s worth it just for this. Other than a new menu option that allows you to transfer your PS4 saved data to the new version, the game is virtually identical, making it a bit of a double-edged sword. EA and Disney Star Wars’ Fallen Order is a pretty good game, but it’s still janky.

There is no doubt that the PS4 release is good at many things, but not spectacular at any. There are some positives, but there are also some negatives. The main antagonist is phenomenal, but she is underutilised. Frame hits are common on 4K, but the combat is incredible. Jumping and sliding puzzles are lacking, but the combat is thrilling. In the end, Fallen Order is a decent experience at just about everything, but when you look backward, it’s easy to find superior Star Wars experiences.

Pros:

  • Updated load times and resolution.

  • Performer Cameron Monaghan.

  • It’s a great soundtrack.

  • Good starting point for Souls-likes.

Cons:

  • The PS5 upgrade barely matters.

  • Mechanics need polishing.

  • Unfinished Haxion Brood elements.

Over 7, I’d rate this game.
