For accessing the Underdark and finding the Nightsong, the player must solve the Moon Puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3. Four rotating stone discs depicting images of the moon are arranged in a way that isn’t even clear what solution you’re supposed to strive for, and even if you do, it’s difficult to accomplish. Fortunately, we have a guide below to guide you through the process. Our guide will help you get through the Defiled Temple in BG3 if you’re having trouble solving the moon puzzle.
A Solution to the Baldur’s Gate 3 Moon Puzzle
By placing the full moon images at the top, half moons in the middle, and no moons at the bottom, you can solve the Baldur’s Gate 3 moon puzzle. You are aiming for the exact arrangement shown.
We consider the “top” disc as the one with the seven white stars in its center (Selune’s symbol), closest to the fallen statue. The following solution we found worked, assuming you have not touched any discs yet:
- Top
- Left
- Right twice
- Bottom three times
- Left twice
- Right two times

Getting the solution primed and opening the door will take some effort, but you should have the solution by this point. Are you curious about how it came to be? In fact, you can see it inscribed on the wall of the explosives room next to Priestess Gut’s ritual room above (though you’ll have to find a way in past the guards).
Getting Through the Defined Temple Without Doing the Moon Puzzle
There is an alternative to the moon puzzle if you do not want to deal with it. Your characters will be prompted to do a perception check when they reach the fallen statue past the top moon disc. If one of them passes, a lever will appear on the right wall. In case you don’t have Astarion with you, you can try to unlock the lever with a lockpick. In the event you succeed, the moon puzzle won’t need to be solved, so you won’t have to worry about opening the secret door to the Underdark!
