Is your DualSense controller faceplate getting old? Luckily, replacing the faceplate is a quick and easy DIY job.
Faceplates are the black parts around the joysticks on the controller that can be easily removed and replaced with compatible ones. Remove the existing faceplate first, whether you’re changing your PS5 controller’s faceplate or fully disassembling it for repairs.
The PS5 Controller’s Faceplate: How to Remove It
You can easily remove and replace the faceplate on the PS5 DualSense controller, one of its hidden features. Plastic pry tools are all you need for this. You don’t have to worry about screws or cables. Using gentle, well-placed tugs, you can pull the faceplate in and out.
You can pry it open with anything with a slim flat head. The best way to keep the controller from scratching is to use plastic. It’s surprising how effective a guitar pick is if you don’t have a professional pry tool. Faceplates protect and look good. The controller isn’t connected to any functional parts, so it’s even easier and safer. In this project, gentleness is key. PS5 controllers’ faceplates are thin plastic plates; if you use too much force, they’ll crack.
Putting your tool and controller on your desk is the first step.
- Pull the handle down gently with your pry tool.
- Don’t worry about it once you get it open. You can do the same thing with the other handle.
- Start on one side, then work your way up to the charging port on the other side.
- Gently pull up the faceplate until it detaches from the controller once you get to the joysticks.
There you go, the PS5 controller’s faceplate is off. The controller’s screws are exposed when you remove the faceplate. Afterwards, you can take the controller apart or install a new faceplate.
Faceplates for PS5 Controllers
There are no tools needed for installing the faceplate. Put the faceplate in place with a few nudges. Put your new faceplate on the controller. The faceplate we’re installing is metallic gold. It’s almost a reverse process to install the faceplate:
- Put wedges around the touchbar’s sharp edges.
- Give the joysticks a nudge. Hopefully, this will lower the faceplate on the controller.
- Make sure you hear a click when you press the faceplate in.
- You’ll want to work your way down to the grips.
- Last but not least, press the faceplate against the charging port on the controller.
That’s awesome! It’s back on your faceplate now. Make sure there aren’t any gaps in the controller. Make sure the faceplate clicks if there were any. There you go! That’s it, you’ve replaced the faceplate on your DualSense controller. Show off your custom controller to your friends. Your PS5 controller can be even more customized with custom thumb grips.
