Sony’s back in the portable gaming world, but it’s not quite in the way you’d expect. We don’t have a PSP Ultra or PS Vita 2, but PlayStation gamers will be able to play their favorite games anywhere they have a strong Wi-Fi connection later this year, hopefully.
Project Q: Sony’s New Portable Gaming Device
There have been rumors floating around the internet for a while that Sony is working on a handheld gaming device.
The showcase announced a bunch of awesome upcoming releases, but Jim Ryan confirmed that a new portable PlayStation game system called Project Q is in the works. There was a lot of detail about Sony’s new handheld game device, but there wasn’t much on how it works, so we’re still not sure if it’ll be one of the best.
What’s the Deal With Sony’s Project Q?
With an 8″ HD screen, Sony’s Project Q is a portable handheld gaming device. You can play portable games with this DualSense controller split in half and attached to either side of a screen.
Project Q doesn’t play games physically, which is one of its main characteristics. Rather than stream games, Project Q uses Remote Play. Remote Play lets you play PS5 games over Wi-Fi on your phone, making it easier to play PS5 games on your phone. Players must have a PS5 and a strong and stable internet connection to use Project Q because it streams only games they already have.
What’s the Difference Between Project Q and Other Handheld Devices?
With its 8″ HD screen, Project Q is bigger than the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, two of the most popular handheld consoles out there. Despite not sounding like a lot, an inch is a lot better than nothing.
In terms of Project Q, the most serious concern is that it only works via Remote Play. Recent years have seen a rise in cloud gaming, but it’s definitely worse than playing on the system. It’s a weaker connection and a poorer experience.
Games can also use Remote Play on their mobile devices to get a feel for how the Project Q will work by setting it up and using it on their mobile. As for Project Q’s price, there’s no word yet, but since Remote Play lets you play your PS5 on the go for free, it makes you wonder if it’s worth buying.
Sony’s Project Q Could Start a Portable Gaming Era
It’s still unclear when Project Q will be released or how much it will cost, but the idea of playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from your bed is appealing. Project Q could lead to even better things in the future in terms of portable gaming for Sony, since PlayStation has had great success in the portable market before.
