PS4 Horror Puzzle Game – The Tartarus Key

If games paying tribute to the low poly graphics of the PS1 era are going to be this good, then long may the renaissance continue. This first-person survival game is like Resident Evil, but it lacks combat and undead enemies. You wake up in a booby-trapped mansion, and a series of delightfully obtuse puzzles and SAW-like traps keep you from escaping.

In Vertical Reach’s first PlayStation game, you have to unlock doors by turning on the right stove hobs to figure out codes. Embrace the silliness and your experience will be all the better. These are the sort of ridiculous solutions you’d never find in real life, but work comically well in a video game.

Although some puzzles can be brute force with a bit of trial and error, a few were so perplexing we needed help.

Despite no voice acting, good writing over walkie-talkies gives you a sense of each character. The story ties together why you’re trapped and who put you there. Taking different approaches to your time trapped in the mansion helps you stand out.

You’ll discover many quirky rooms throughout the game’s five to six hours of playtime. Conversations are presented the way they were on Sony’s first home system, which is a pleasant return to Metal Gear Solid. Sony’s first home system may offer better environments, but the character models are absolutely stunning.

This PS4 title is exactly what you’re looking for if you enjoy unconventional puzzles like Resident Evil or Silent Hill.
