Jailbreaking Your PS5: 5 Reasons Not To

It’s inevitable that someone will jailbreak a console after a while. Eventually, a modder released the PS 5 from its “prison” in October 2022.

Thanks to the PS5 jailbreak, you can install “free” games and custom software. Lance McDonald, for instance, managed to get his hands on P.T. (the awesome Silent Hills teaser). Despite looking pretty cool, jailbreaking your PS5 isn’t a good idea.

1. Games and PS5 Can’t Be Updated

A certain firmware version or older is required to jailbreak your PlayStation 5. It’s best to hold off updating your PS5 if you’re going to jailbreak it. Until the jailbreaking process catches up, you won’t get the benefits of future updates, like performance improvements, bug fixes, and new features.

PS5s need the latest firmware to connect to the PlayStation Network. The PlayStation Network won’t work on a jailbroken console. Digital games can’t be bought or downloaded either. Additionally, you can’t update your already-installed ones. Depending on the game, you may not even be able to install disc-based games if they require a higher firmware version.

2. Playing With Friends Online Isn’t Possible

You’ll also lose online multiplayer when you jailbreak your console. You can only play multiplayer games with friends online if some games don’t have split-screen. The PlayStation Network (PSN) isn’t accessible if you jailbreak your PS5. Also, you won’t have PS5 Share Play or PS5 Share Screen, which are social gaming features.

3. PSN Accounts or Consoles Are at Risk

Despite the fact that your jailbroken PlayStation 5 is still connected to the internet, we recommend keeping it offline (or not jailbreaking it at all). Sony can find out what you did if your console is online and sending data to Sony’s servers. Due to your violation of PlayStation’s terms of service, it can permanently ban your PSN account.

You’ll lose access to all your digital games, services, and subscriptions if your account can’t access PSN. The worst part is you won’t even get a refund. Create a new PSN account and start over. Your PlayStation 5 console can also be banned by Sony. You can still sign into the PlayStation Network on that PS5, but your account is safe.

4. Ps5s Can Be Bricked

You’ve got to be careful when jailbreaking your PS5, as any mistake could permanently ruin it. In other words, the console becomes just a glorified brick you can use to stop doors or hold papers. Bricked PS5s can only be fixed by getting new ones.

5. Your Warranty Will Be Voided

It’s not illegal to jailbreak your PS4 or PS5, but it violates your warranty. Sony doesn’t allow you to tamper with the system or modify it, as stated in the warranty for the PS5. Sony won’t replace or fix a bricked console even if it’s still under warranty.

Take the Risk of Jailbreaking Your PS5

There are risks involved in jailbreaking a console. You can lose your warranty support if Sony bans your PSN account or PS5. In addition, you’ll miss out on the PS5’s online capabilities if you pirate games. Definitely not.
