In Minecraft Legends, you must defend the Overworld from an interdimensional Piglin invasion as you defend Mojang’s famous cubed universe. While it’s fun in short bursts, simplicity and repetition quickly set in, so players who want an engaging strategy game should probably look elsewhere.
It is Legends’ single-player campaign that shines, mostly incomprehensible from a plot perspective but with beautiful cutscenes. With Minecraft’s growing audience, Mojang knows its audience well; the young and the young-at-heart will happily play for hours on end.
The gameplay is simplistic (at least, for us). Your avatar can’t directly impact combat outside of a simple melee attack. Rather, you lead them around the battlefield, recruiting troops and ordering them. Selecting units requires standing right on top of them, which can become chaotic during combat. Command groups cannot be created or troop types cannot be selected quickly, which compoundes the problem.
If you command your minions to attack an enemy structure or point them in the right direction, they will continue to fight until they succeed or die. Around a dozen forces work under your command to destroy structures or heal allied units.
In some truly large-scale assaults, you will besiege Piglin fortresses, using all your tools at your disposal to drive the invaders out. Initially fun, it wears off quickly due to low difficulty. Multiplayer offers more challenge, but control issues make it nothing more than a brief distraction.
Although Minecraft Legends lacks the strategic depth to appeal to genre veterans, it is a great way to get newcomers or younger audiences interested.
