The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story (PS5) – Impressive Visuals and Combat, but Thin Narrative

The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story is the latest addition to Riot Forge’s expanding League of Legends universe. This top-down action RPG puts you in control of Sylas, a magic-sensitive revolutionary seeking revenge against the Mageseekers. The game is story-driven, with combat-focused chapters that gradually upgrade Sylas’s abilities and add allies to his cause.

The storytelling is decent, but it’s not particularly in-depth. The game relies on quick conversations between characters and scattered notes to provide context. The characters are endearing, though, and the combat is the main draw of the game.

The combat starts off simple but quickly becomes an intricate dance of elemental destruction. Sylas can rip magical attacks from his enemies and repurpose them, striking elemental weaknesses and dealing big damage. Spells can also be permanently unlocked as you progress, letting you customize your magical loadout before each mission. Fights are intense affairs, especially later on when you’ll be taking on large groups of foes in relatively small arenas. Dodging and repositioning yourself is crucial, but the combat can be hard to follow visually due to the game’s pixelated art style.

The game’s tight controls make for a satisfying system, but the enemy repetition becomes a problem as tougher encounters feel like they’re just throwing more and more of the same enemies at you. Additionally, there are a lot of reused environments in the game, which can make it feel a bit stale after a while.

Overall, The Mageseeker is an enjoyable action RPG with some cool combat mechanics and a decent story. The sprites and art are lovely, and the music is emotive. However, it stops just shy of being a great game, earning a score of 7 out of 10.
