Using Xbox FPS Boost, you can boost the performance of backwards compatible games on Xbox Series X|S without re-buying anything or subscribing to a premium plan. Because Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S have a big jump in hardware specs, FPS Boost makes it possible to render older games at higher settings than developers originally intended.
Microsoft had to lower the resolution of some games in order to make them run better. Normally, FPS Boost won’t work here, so you can still play at the original resolution. It will be the default setting if FPS Boost improves performance without causing any downsides. You might feel like you’re playing new Xbox games with the free FPS Boost feature on your Xbox Series X|S, but only if the games support it.
Is FPS Boost available for Xbox Series X|S games?
There aren’t all backwards compatible Xbox games supported by FPS Boost yet. However, they’re working hard to bring as many classic Xbox games as they can. It’s not as easy as giving a game new hardware to make it run faster. You may get bugs and glitches because of the increased system power, which developers didn’t program for.
The game needs to stay stable after Microsoft boosts it. Before the game runs as smooth as the original release, a lot of testing and bug-finding must be done. Keep checking in every so often, even if your favorite game isn’t on the list, since Xbox updates the table whenever new games get next-gen updates.
Can the Xbox Series S handle FPS Boost?
There is a difference when it comes to the FPS Boost feature on Xbox Series S because of key differences related to power. In terms of raw power and specifications, the Xbox Series X is undoubtedly the better console than the Xbox Series S. Unfortunately, this means some backwards compatible games will not benefit from the FPS boost.
Despite the majority of games being FPS-boosted on Xbox Series X or S, some fall behind and only run at 60Hz on the Series S, as opposed to 120Hz on the Series X. FPS Boost won’t be available in some games on Xbox Series S that use a lot of resources. In the Xbox Wire list above, they’re labeled as “not available”.

- Open the guide menu by pressing the Xbox button.
- Tap My games & apps, then tap See all.
- You can turn on FPS boost by highlighting Games.
- Select Manage game and add-ons from the Menu button in your chosen game.
- Select Compatibility.
- Turn on FPS boost.
Now that you’ve enabled FPS boost, you can start playing your Xbox game with higher FPS, but you may have to restart the game first to make sure it’s enabled.
