Multiplayer Stealth Is Deceive Inc’s Main Mission (PS5)

It’s an online multiplayer game where staying incognito is key. The game combines hero shooter characters with stealth and deduction from Among Us, and multiplayer from Assassin’s Creed. Despite not being as smoothly merged as one might hope, it works pretty well.

Undercover is the game’s sole mode, where you appear identical to one of the non-player characters. Three terminals are scattered throughout the levels, which you need to deactivate to reach the real objective — a high-security package. You and 11 others are competing to escape with the package. As you progress the objective, watch out for suspicious behavior from others while not getting spotted yourself.

Adding data points and key cards allows you to explore further. Simple levels of authority allow you to enter specific areas without detection. A cleverly designed mode, it can be played solo or in a team. In addition to their weapons, agents have passive and special abilities, and levelling them up unlocks additional options.

The ensuing shootout is always messy when someone is holding the package and heading to an extraction point. The shooting feels flat, and death can happen quickly, making the previous 15 minutes meticulously sneaking around seem hollow.

Deceive Inc.’s core is good; deducing who could be your opponent while blending in is fun and tense. Adding more maps and modes is going to be needed before it reaches its full potential. It has a great premise and solid starting point; hopefully it can grow into something worthwhile.

Pros:

  • Plot about spies vs. spies

  • Maps of great detail

  • Agent variety is decent

  • Presenting nicely

  • Stealing social media

Cons:

  • Shootouts

  • There isn’t much content

  • Can’t enlarge tiny text

  • A few frame rate dips

Score is 6 over 10.
