In Hogwarts Legacy, When Are Mounts Unlocked?

Hogwarts Legacy mounts are one of the best ways to travel around the map, so make sure to unlock them as soon as possible. Although it might take longer than just jumping on your Hogwarts Legacy broom, it’s much more majestic and visually appealing. In Hogwarts Legacy, mounts unlock a lot later than brooms, so if you want to prioritize one or aren’t sure where mounts are, let me explain.

Getting mounts in Hogwarts Legacy

Getting mounts in Hogwarts Legacy requires completing the High Keep mission. This main mission quest follows the second trial – Charles Rookwood’s Trial – and starts with a meeting with Natty near old castle ruins, where you’ll climb the battlements as well.

Once you have completed this quest you will be able to summon Highwing as a mount. He can both fly and run around on the ground, depending on how you want to use him.

You’ll also be able to unlock any mount bonuses you might have unlocked from pre-orders or Deluxe Editions. Hogwarts Legacy owners get an onyx hippogriff called Caligo, while Deluxe Edition owners also get a Thestral called Sepulchria.

Mount summoning in Hogwarts Legacy

When you complete the High Keep mission and have access to Highwing, you can summon it using L1 / LB and triangle / Y. Basically, bring up your radial gear menu and you can see and activate Highwing there.

As soon as you’re on, you can press X / A to take off, or you can run along the ground while mounted. In the air, you can press R2 / RT to go faster, and then use the right analogue stick to adjust your height.

The landing on a mount is much harder than on a broom, so you must push until your mount reaches the ground, then press circle / B to get off.

Approximately how many mounts are there?

A total of four Hogwarts Legacy mounts are available in the game. These are:

  • Highwing the white Hippogriff (unlocked by completing The High Keep mission)
  • Caligo the onyx Hippogriff (pre-order bonus)
  • Sepulchria the Thestral (Deluxe Edition bonus)
  • Lord of the Shore the Graphorn (unlocked by completing the quest San Bakar’s Trial)
