Among the 50 games launching with PSVR2, Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded is one of the smaller VR ports. You are dropped into the world of the cult classic Zombieland as a VR zombie shooter. In my opinion, it’s not going to be anything to write home about, and is just a cheap cash grab on an existing franchise. You’ll find yourself engaging in a fun and snappy arcade experience that’s perfect for drop-in, drop-out sessions once you give it some time.
The four characters from Zombieland are at your base of operations in Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded. We have Abigail Breslin voice Little Rock, Brett Harrellson’s brother voices Tallahassee, and we try to recreate Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone’s performances. There is some narrative reasoning behind it, but it doesn’t really matter. This game is all about shooting zombies, and if you’re like us, you’ll love it.
You will face off against a bunch of different zombie types with the aim of streamlining your runs and attaining constantly improving personal bests. Missions have an on-rail structure, much like House of the Dead arcade shooter. In terms of VR experiences, it’s a simple formula, and levels are short — especially for newbies.
As you progress through the game, difficulty increases, and ticking off each of the challenges becomes increasingly addictive. Outside of perhaps Pistol Whip, we haven’t found a VR experience that feels quite like this.
However, Zombieland did not really rely on any form of movie-based nostalgia, so we were pleasantly surprised. With its simple yet effective structure, we enjoyed the game another half hour, aided by the fun gun controls. It’s not out to win any awards, and it doesn’t push the medium any further, but if you’re looking for a zombie shooter, you can’t really go wrong with it.
