Spellbreak Review

The battle royale genre is no longer fresh. Massive games like Fortnite and Warzone have transformed the gaming landscape forever. Free-to-play has never looked better. The number of developers who attempted to copy their formula but failed to create anything new is a never-ending list.

A new title stands out, however, and it’s called Spellbreak. Proletariat’s magic-based battle royale game offers so many new ingredients that it can’t be ignored.

It’s a free-to-play spellcasting battle royale set in an imaginary world called Hollow Lands, where assault rifles and firearms are exchanged for magic gauntlets.

The Game

It can be tricky to adjust to a third-person battle royale from Warzone or Apex Legends, but Spellbreak’s tutorial helps break everything down.

You have more freedom to roam around and not worry about running into campers because the total number of players per match is smaller. Considering mobility, runes, and perks, the large open maps make sense. Everyone gets to pick a rune, which is lootable, in addition to gauntlets. You can use them to jump in a burst or turn invisible for a short time.

Along with runes, there are three gear slots. The gauntlets, as well as your boots, come in a range of rarities, with Legendary being the highest tier. You can pick up boots that move faster, amulets that give you more mana, and belts that shield you. Scrolls on the ground help you level up your three talents.

You can store mana potions and shield potions in two stacks of two in your four slots. Smalls heal for 20, and larges heal for 60. For most people, looting is the least enjoyable part of a battle royale. If you encounter someone wearing legendaries, though, you still stand a chance.

Summary

This new battle royale introduces elements of gauntlets and a complex spell combo system that’s easy to understand but hard to master. Proletariat did a great job polishing Spellbreak, and it feels amazing to play. Spellbreak has the potential to be one of the top battle royale games.
