How to Upgrade Your Gear in Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy gives you a bonus in combat when you upgrade your gear. We’ll show you how to unlock the system and how it works.

In Hogwarts Legacy, you will often need to acquire various pieces of gear, both offensively and defensively. By switching to higher-level gear, you can enhance your stats as well as enjoy extra benefits. There will be messages about improving your gear early in Hogwarts Legacy, but you will need to advance a few steps before you can do so. This is how you can upgrade your gear in Hogwarts Legacy.

Materials from beasts are needed

Upon attending the first Beasts class and completing all of the story quests at that time, Professor Weasley will send you an owl letter telling you there is something new available in the Room of Requirement, starting the quest “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom.” This quest is given by Deek, the house-elf that resides in the Room of Requirement. A tutorial will be given on collecting beasts in the wild and caring for them in the Room of Requirement during this quest.

In order to upgrade the first tier of your gear, you will need a Puffskien, Jobberknoll, and Mooncalf. Check out our beast-capturing guide for more information on capturing beasts and where to find them. After completing this quest, Deek will give you a loom to add to your Room of Requirement, which can be used to upgrade your gear.

As long as the beasts have been fed and petted, you can collect materials every 25-30 minutes. You can save yourself some time if you buy a beast feeder from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade. This is because your beasts can feed themselves, saving you spell slots and time.

Equipment upgrade

To upgrade gear to its maximum level, a wide variety of materials are needed.

Based on a few factors, you will need different amounts and combinations of beast material for each piece of equipment you own. The rarity of the gear impacts this–low rarity gear cannot be upgraded at all–as well as which piece of clothing the gear is. If the piece of gear primarily provides defense, upgrading it will add offense stats, and vice versa. Gear can be upgraded three times, but it will require materials from some of the game’s rarest beasts in order to do so.

The ability to swap or add traits is also available on equipment. Adding a trait to gear requires materials, but nothing rare. The strength of the trait that you can slot into a piece of gear depends on the rarity of the item, with legendary pieces of gear having the strongest traits.

Most of the materials in the game can be found in Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade. However, they can be expensive and you can only buy one of each before the store refreshes.
