Moonrider: Vengeful Guardian is a Refreshing Throwback

Arcade Crew and Berzerk Studio’s Metroidvania title, Infernax, was among my top three games. The first half of the year was really good for setting expectations. So naturally, when I saw that JoyMasher would be developing a retro-themed game for The Arcade Crew in 2023, I had to check it out.

Instead of a Metroidvania, Vengeful Guardian Moonrider would focus on the long forgotten retro platformers of the 80s and 90s. A strange title and gorgeous visuals accompanied some intriguing-looking gameplay in this game.

As a result, I couldn’t resist trying Vengeful Guardian Moonrider for myself. After playing Vengeful Guardian Moonrider, I can definitely say that this title will set the stage for 2023.

Takeaways from Vengeful Guardian Moonrider

  • There are many gameplay shakeups in Vengeful Guardian Moonrider levels.

  • Vengeful Guardian Moonrider maintains that iconic retro feel despite many original ideas.

  • Moonrider’s aesthetic is worth the price of admission on its own.

  • Games gamers want are published by Arcade Crew.

Final Score: 9/10

In my opinion, Vengeful Guardian Moonrider was one of the best games of the year. The Arcade Crew has done it again, delivering another fantastic retro arcade game. In addition to making for a fun game, JoyMasher has some really innovative ideas that will benefit the industry.

The visuals, sounds, gameplay, and environments of Vengeful Guardian Moonrider make it well worth the extra money for gamers looking for something fun.

It’s available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, and Amazon Luna.
