‘Rollerdrome’ Review: An Impossible Game

I can safely say Rollerdrome is one of the coolest video games. You have to pull off fancy roller-skating tricks to regain ammo in this third-person action shooter. You play Kara Hassan, who signed up for a near-future bloodsport called Rollerdrome. You’ll work your way through a few levels around the world after the tutorial. Kill all the enemies, known as House Players, as fast as you can while entertaining a global audience.

The difficulty ramps up pretty evenly. If you don’t play with assist mode and accessibility options on, you’ll need to complete a certain number of challenges to unlock the next stage. You’ll be able to achieve your goals with auto-aim and a variety of weapons. It’s a blast from start to finish. It’s as nice to play with as it is to look at. Spinning in the air to fire a grenade at an enemy never gets old. Kara won’t crash on the ground if you don’t land a trick perfectly – unlike Roll7’s OlliOlli games. It’s hard to quit the game itself too. Leaderboards are a great way to keep players playing Rollerdrome after they beat the story. Out For Blood mode might keep you coming back.

It’s the story, though, that’s my biggest problem. Roll7 has built a compelling world, but the narrative is predictable. I didn’t find anything surprising in it. One other thing I didn’t like was how some of the arenas were set in malls. That said, I don’t mind those missteps. Gameplay is so good that it more than makes up for the story. For this review, I played through Rollerdrome on PlayStation 5. 3D audio and DualSense controllers didn’t add a lot to the experience, but haptic feedback helped make it more immersive. PS5 runs smooth as silk too. The Rollerdrome is absolutely worth checking out if you’re looking for something different to play this summer.
