The company has acquired the online tournament platform Repeat.gg to expand into esports.
Players can compete in leaderboard-based tournaments such as Fortnite, League of Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone. Scores are tracked by kills or victories, and only your top matches count. Thus, Repeat.gg strives to open up esports to a wider audience and offers Amazon gift cards or cash prize pools.
Sony’s vice president of competitive gaming Steven Roberts tells GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation’s vision with esports is to break down barriers for gamers to compete. They’re looking forward to expanding their esports offerings with the talented team at Repeat.gg.
It is likely that Repeat.gg will help develop the technology for Sony’s Tournaments feature, an extension of a feature developed with ESL for PS4.
As part of a joint deal with esports venture RTS, Sony acquired Evo, the most prominent tournament series in the fighting game community. Similarly, Repeat.gg will continue to host tournaments for other consoles, PCs, and mobile games as well.
Getting practice time in with the best online games will help you stay competitive.
