Emulated Switch Games Are Forbidden by Nintendo

Don’t put Breath of the Wild on your Steam Deck. SteamGridDB lets users upload images for Steam’s library. You can customize how many of the images look in your Steam library since they are alternate headers or box art. This database is mostly used for non-Steam games, like emulators for consoles. Even Valve had been using a Switch emulator on the handheld since the Steam Deck launched. Even YouTube videos showing how to install Switch emulators have been taken down by Nintendo.

Now, they’ve taken down images related to six Switch games: Pokemon Scarlet, Pokemon Violet, Splatoon 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Users are already reuploading the affected images, but it’s unclear how long they’ll stay up. Some people are uploading DMCA-friendly box art.

SteamGridDB only hosts images that you can import into your Steam library. The site doesn’t host the ROMs or ISOs you’d need to pirate video games. Additionally, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of other Nintendo games on the site that aren’t affected by the DMCA notice. Nintendo is taking whatever strange, small steps it can to keep its biggest Switch games from being associated with Steam.
