It’s an Arcade mode that transformed a demanding MOBA into an approachable turn-based game. Valve plans to release a standalone version of Auto Chess soon.
This is the one the original Auto Chess team is working on- it features all-new characters instead of being based on Dota characters. Like Artifact, a digital card game that uses Dota characters and settings, Valve’s version will be a standalone product. This is the first (and likely last) time I’ve thought about Artifact in 2019.
In a blog post, Valve explained why making a new Auto Chess game with familiar characters and the original creators wasn’t in the cards.
“In February, we flew the Drodo team over from China to chat about Dota Auto Chess, and to see if they wanted to collaborate directly with us (sorry about the snow, Drodo). We both agreed that Valve and Drodo couldn’t work directly together for a variety of reasons. We agreed to build our own stand-alone versions, and support each other to the fullest.”
If Auto Chess stays on mobile platforms and Dota Auto Chess stays on PC, it could work out fine. Hopefully this early collaboration will keep things from getting weird like they did with Dota copyright.
