These Classic Games Are Getting Killed Off By EA

In the next few weeks, Electronic Arts will shut down a few games’ online services. Ten games’ online services will end between October 20 and January 19. The affected games include Army of Two: The 40th Day, Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, Gatling Gears, Onrush, Mercenaries 2, Mirror’s Edge, NBA Jam On Fire Edition, and Shank 2.

The following dates will mark the end of online services for these games:

  • Oct 20: Army of Two: The 40th Day & Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel
  • November 9: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, and Mercenaries 2
  • November 30: Onrush
  • January 19: Gatling Gears, Mirror’s Edge, NBA Jam On Fire Edition, and Shank 2

It’s unclear how many people are still playing any of these games despite the announcement. EA would definitely keep making money on these titles for a long time if it believed it could. No matter how successful they are, all online games will end up the same. Keeping these games’ servers running takes time and resources, and developers will eventually decide the costs outweigh the profits.
