A new skin reverses the evil ways of League of Legends’ biggest villain.
On the testing server last night, King Viego, a sword-wielding champion introduced to League of Legends last year a new skin. It is a white-haired character with a ghostly crown and bad-guy demeanor, but with updated skin.
The in-lore wife of Virgo is Isolde, whose death not only turns him into a villain but also makes him the greatest threat to League of Legends.
LoL’s narrative began hundreds of years ago when Viego ruled the Blessed Isles, a beautiful and peaceful region. In one last attempt, Viego plunged his wife’s body into a sacred, healing pool at the heart of his kingdom in an attempt to cure her sickness. In the end, his wife succumbed to her illness.
Riot’s actions destroyed and corrupted the Blessed Isles, resulting in the corrupted Shadow Isles. Although it rendered Viego undead, it did not stop him from attempting to return to his wife. It is Riot’s efforts to become undead that make him a central character in his story. Furthermore, Viego’s efforts have appeared in the standalone game The Ruined King and in an upcoming book, also titled Ruination.
Viego’s redemption will not be demonstrated by just one skin. However, it’s an interesting choice, since Riot rarely chooses cosmetics based on characters’ backstories or evolving narratives. In fact, some of the most recent ones date all the way back to 2015, besides those released for the Ruination event.
