Ten of the best Nintendo games

It’s no secret that Nintendo has a long history of producing some of the best video games of all time. From early classics like Super Mario Bros. to more recent hits like Breath of the Wild, the company has a well-deserved reputation for quality. With that in mind, here are ten of the best Nintendo games of all time, in no particular order.

Super Mario Bros.

This 1985 platformer is not only one of the best Nintendo games of all time, but one of the best video games period. Its simple but clever design, catchy soundtrack, and lovable characters have helped it maintain its popularity for over three decades. It introduced millions of gamers to the world of Mario, and its simple yet addictive gameplay has kept players hooked for decades.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The latest entry in one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises, Breath of the Wild is a massive and truly ambitious open-world adventure game. It’s also one of the prettiest and most visually stunning games on any platform.

Super Mario 64:

One of the first 3D platformers and a key game in the launch lineup for the Nintendo 64, Super Mario 64 is still fun to play today. Its tight controls and innovative level design set a new standard for the genre and inspired countless imitators.

Metroid Prime:

The Metroid series took a turn for the first-person with this 2002 Gamecube release, and the result was nothing short of amazing. Featuring an immersive world to explore, smart enemy design, and some of the best graphics ever seen on a console at that time, Metroid Prime is still considered one of the all-time greats.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Another Zelda classic, A Link to the Past is often cited as one of the best 16-bit games ever made. Its dark tone, intricate dungeons, and memorable story set it apart from other games in the series, and it continues to influence Zelda games today.

Super Metroid

Often considered one of if not the best installment in the Metroid series, Super Metroid improved on its predecessor in nearly every way. Featuring an even bigger world to explore, new power-ups, and some truly tough bosses, it’s a must-play for any fan of action-adventure games.

Donkey Kong Country

One of the earliest examples of using 3D graphics to create a believable 2D world, Donkey Kong Country was an instant classic when it released in 1994. Its beautiful visuals (courtesy of British studio Rare), catchy music, and tight gameplay make it one worth revisiting even now.

Super Smash Bros.

One of Nintendo’s biggest crossover hits, Super Smash Bros. pits characters from all across its wide array of franchises against each other in frantic multiplayer battles. It’s easy to pick up but difficult to master, making it perfect for casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Final Fantasy VI

While not originally developed by Nintendo (it was created by Japanese studio Squaresoft), this 16-bit RPG quickly became one of the most popular games on the Super Nintendo. Its sweeping story line, memorable characters, and excellent gameplay have kept it relevant even 26 years later.

Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow

And finally we have Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, the original Pokémon games that started it all back in 1996. With its simple yet addictive gameplay, engrossing creature collection mechanic, and charming 8-bit visuals, it’s easy to see why this game (and franchise) has stood the test of time. A true classic that any fan should experience.
